Communing with God

And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door. (Exo 33:9-10)

There are a few men in the Bible who are mentioned as having had a close walk with God. Enoch and Noah walked with God, Job conversed with God (Job 38:1) and Abraham stood before God (Gen 18:22) and God talked with Moses (Exo 33:11). While the people worshipped God outside their tent doors, “God spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks unto his friend” (Exo 33:11). These are the two types of believers today – one group is satisfied by just seeing a cloudy pillar of God’s glory. They are happy with seeing the glory of God revealed in the creation or through someone’s anointed ministry. Little do they realize these are just signposts to God and not God Himself! They wish to pitch tents on the Mount of Transfiguration and see some dazzling incident without noticing God who is manifesting His glory. On the other hand, there are a few who are desperate to meet God Himself and, like Moses, cry out “I beseech thee, shew me thy glory” (Exo 33:18). They are not satisfied with just thunders and lightnings (Exo 19:16). These people enter into the tabernacle and God speaks with them as with a friend. Such desperate people, like young Joshua, are satisfied not by seeing the prophet of God but by knowing the God of the prophet and they continue to be in God’s presence (Exo 33:11).
