As an individual and as a church, we need to be dependent on the Holy Spirit.

John knew that the pharisees were superficial.
Taken baptism but not knowing that our old man is corrupt, may not have the conviction that we are utterly sinful. We need a conviction of our condition.
Anything good I do, If Jesus does not do it, then it is my self that rules.
Romans 7:18
For I know nothing good dwells in me, that is in my flesh.

Wretched man that I am, a realisation that God gave him. When we have that realisation, we depend on God fully.
John 7:37
Jesus stood and cried out saying if anyone is thirsty let him come to Me and drink.
I will not come to Jesus unless I have a thirst, unless I realise my need.
The root of the tree that the axe is laid is the self-centred life.
My self needs to die so the Christ can live in me.

Primary work of the Holy Spirit is conviction of sin. Being sensitive to sin.
Be righteous with money
Judgement – A healthy fear that we need to face Him one day in judgement.
1 Peter 2:1,2
Putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies long for the pure milk of the word so that we may grow in respect to salvation.
