OWE NOTHING TO ANYONE
One of the blessed possibilities God has kept for us is to pursue a life free from debt. Early in the old covenant God offered the promise to Israel that they shall lend to many nations, but they shall not borrow (Deuteronomy 28:12).
In the incident of supernatural provision of the widow’s oil filled jars, Elisha told the widow to sell the oil, pay her debt and then live on the rest. We can see here the priority of clearing debts (2 Kings 4:1-7).
In Mathew 17:24-27 we see the instructive example Jesus displayed by asking Peter to go to sea, take the first fish that comes up on his hook and give the coin found in it’s mouth to pay tax for both of them.
Yet, another occasion Jesus taught to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s (Luke 20:25).
God is happy to support us to “owe nothing to anyone” (Romans 13:8).
